SkyWatch Friday; More of My Moon Obsession

I was a bit more prepared last night as I set up shop to capture the full moon. With pen and paper at hand I made notes when changes were made. Since I loaded these pictures backwards, I’ll just detail what settings I used looking back.

The first 2 photos were my best shots. I finally figured out that changing the metering mode to "spot", I was able to get a better defined picture. Shooting mode was action/sport with the flash off.

The 3rd photo was prior to changing the metering mode to spot. It looks a little dark to me.

If you enlarge the 4th picture you’ll see a small dot of light in the lower left hand corner. I’m not sure if it’s Jupiter or a really, bright star.

I began shooting in AUTO with the flash off and the last photo shows us how successful that turned out. A-Big-Glowing-Glob wasn’t what I saw in the night sky.

I am really enjoying your obsession. Makes a change from my own. Your explanations of each shot and the shot it's self are marvellous. You keep on.

Beautiful moon shots! I was trying to get a photo a few nights ago, because the clouds and moon were lovely together, but then before I managed a good one, I realised the neighbours would think I was trying to look in their windows.... *sigh* I keep forgetting we're in a city, not the countryside I'm used to! LOL So I think I'll just enjoy your beautiful photos of it instead!

    Janice,

Your photographs are beautiful and honestly, moon photos are something I have not even attempted to achieve.

I would just like to note that even 'back in the days' of film, photos could be manipulated in the darkroom to enhance and perfect the image. The same goes for digital and I'd love to see you play around with Photoshop to improve your skills. Not only can post-processing improve an image but it also makes you contemplate what might have been done differently at the shoot. I know I continue to learn every day and as photography is a personal passion of mine I will continue to be open-minded and try new things. There are no wrongs or rights in art, just visual preferences. So perhaps what I desire to see may not be the image you intended to portray...it's all very personal.

At any rate, please look at what two simple actions can do: auto-level and sharpening -

Let me know what you think! And keep up the great work!
