I planned to capture the buds of my pear tree in front of the Columbus sky and was pleasantly surprised to see a bumble bee gathering pollen. Using the action setting I catch a few good photos of this guy/girl hard at work. Enjoy!

My World Tuesday; Leaving the office

The vein of my existence, inclement weather commuting in what I affectionately call the "C-bus". As far as winter driving goes, I hail from Cleveland where I learned to drive in a 1975 Monte Carlo in January. So I do know how to drive in this weather. Heck, I only drive rear-wheel drive cars in the snow, and quite well I might add. That said, the folks here in Columbus have NO CLUE how to negotiate wet, snowy or cold roads. I was able to get the pics with my Blackberry, SAFELY, because we were only traveling at a top speed of 30MPH.

The experts warned us of the coming storm, and it arrived. Photos 1, 2 & 3 were taken around 5:30pm once I got home from work today. Photos 4, 5 & 6 were captured with my Blackberry at 1:30 this afternoon at work. Hilliard is about 20 miles north of my home here in Obetz. North Columbus is definitely getting hit a little harder.

My World Tuesday; Halloween Hockey Game

Christopher’s ready for the game in his Vintage 1985 Mario Lemieux jersey.

Game attendance was a record 19,000+ with 40% Pittsburgh fans. From our Terrace Club Table seats, Christopher covertly hangs his 2009 Stanley Cup rally towel. A game 3 Stanley Cup give-away that Nick and Christopher attended in Pittsburgh this past June.

His team is down 3 to 1 at the beginning of the third period.

Feeling much better once the Penguins scored 2 goals to tie the game.

After a five minute overtime period followed by a shootout, the Penguins WIN!

The night before Halloween in Columbus brought out Fred Flintstone, a She-Devil and a biker chick to High Street.

Here we see a Penguin fan dressed as......a penguin!

One of the Hanson brothers made his way to Nationwide Arena for the game.

On Friday our son Christopher and his girlfriend accompanied Nick and I to the Pittsburgh Penguins verses Columbus Blue Jackets hockey game. Christopher has been a Penguins fan since he was about 6 years old when the Lumberjacks (Penguins farm team) moved to Cleveland. Hailing from NHL-less Cleveland left him with no real options except to cheer for Pittsburgh.

If you walk High Street in Columbus, you will come across many eclectic shops and stores. One such store is Flower Child. They carry items from the 30's thru the 70's. Since vintage clothing seems to be very popular lately, I guess I should have kept my bell-bottom jeans....

SkyWatch Friday; More Columbus Moon Shots

This past Tuesday found me and my Olympus on the deck snapping photos of the moon. I adjusted the metering while shooting in action mode with the flash turned off. The first picture is unaltered. Using the Olympus Master 2 program I adjusted the brightness/contrast on the second shot. The third picture is also unaltered and I manipulated the brightness/contrast on the forth picture.

My World Tuesday; Buckeye Country!

Being the only girl in a household full of testosterone, forced my interest in sports. My husband played football, hockey and was a cyclist. Our son participated in little league, wrestling, 14 years of soccer and still plays hockey. Hailing from Cleveland, we’re die-hard Browns, Indians and Cavs fans. Since moving to the Columbus area we’ve found ourselves surrounded by OSU fanatics. And I mean it literally. This town is absolutely crazy for all things Buckeye.

Even the “Best damn band in the land”…..

UPDATE: Commenter Barb asked what sports I liked to play. I actually played basketball and softball in high school and until my 2001 back surgery played spring, summer and fall softball for various leagues in our city. And I was a "band geek". Playing the clarinet, french horn and trumpet in the marching and jazz bands in junior and senior high school.

We live in between Grove City and Groveport, just outside the 270 loop around Columbus. And this weekend we have the pleasure of watching the hot air balloons take flight from Grove City. They're hosting a Hot Air Balloon Festival and I hope to capture more balloons. ENJOY!

I've said before how close we live to Rickenbacker Airport and have the pleasure of seeing all types of aircraft flying overhead. I was returning home a few days ago and saw a cargo plane circling the airport. Carefully steering the Corvette with my knee, I turn my Nikon L20 on, pointed it out the car window and started clicking. The first picture came out well for not really knowing what I was shooting. The second is of the cargo plane beyond the church.

I was looking through my walk-in-the-park pictures and came

across this spider web. It was taken as we were leaving the path

and heading towards the car. When you enlarge the photo you can

My World Tuesday; Spider webs

My niece and her fiancé came to visit this past weekend. While Nick and

Derek washed and detailed his car, Steph and I took a walk in one of our local

parks. Three Rivers Park is where Alum Creek, Big Walnut and

Blacklick Creek all meet. Maybe they should call it Three Creek Park. As we

crossed one of the bridges we noticed a few spider webs. After we confirmed the

absence of spiders we moved in and photographed them. You can see the

prey just waiting to be consumed later by the spider(s). I encourage you to enlarge

SkyWatch Friday; The Storm and the Reward

Nick and I were driving home from North Carolina when we drove into this storm

somewhere in the mountains of West Virginia. It was just before dusk and the

setting sun made the storm clouds pop with color. As we drove in and out of the

rain I was able to capture a rainbow.

On Saturday Nick’s company picnic was held at Huntington Park, Home of the Columbus Clippers. It was my first time visiting the park since our move in 2007. We had really good seats; the first row on the third base line. I guess I’m used to watching baseball at Jacobs Field,( I can't bring myself to call it Progressive Field), because I was surprised at how small the park is.

SkyWatch Friday; More of My Moon Obsession

I was a bit more prepared last night as I set up shop to capture the full moon. With pen and paper at hand I made notes when changes were made. Since I loaded these pictures backwards, I’ll just detail what settings I used looking back.

The first 2 photos were my best shots. I finally figured out that changing the metering mode to "spot", I was able to get a better defined picture. Shooting mode was action/sport with the flash off.

The 3rd photo was prior to changing the metering mode to spot. It looks a little dark to me.

If you enlarge the 4th picture you’ll see a small dot of light in the lower left hand corner. I’m not sure if it’s Jupiter or a really, bright star.

I began shooting in AUTO with the flash off and the last photo shows us how successful that turned out. A-Big-Glowing-Glob wasn’t what I saw in the night sky.

My World Tuesday; Shootin' the moon!

It seems I've been obsessed with the moon lately. Specifically, getting a

really detailed photo. I captured these pictures on Friday. The first 2 just

before dusk, it was around 8pm. I set the Olympus on auto with the flash off

and proceeded to adjust the compression ratio. I could see very little, if any

difference. After I transferred the first batch and was completely unsatisfied with

what I saw. Then I noticed the moon was a bit brighter and it was just after dusk (9pm).

Since I'd already drug all my equipment back in the house and I didn't want to

clean my lenses again (humidity was at 95%, yuk), I decided to set up the

tripod in the kitchen and shoot thru the window.

SkyWatch Friday; Columbus moon

A few nights ago I was able to capture these photos of the

waxing crescent moon. All pictures were captured with my

Olympus attached to my tripod. I used the night setting for the

first picture. I wasn't pleased because it clearly wasn't what I saw

in the sky. I switch to auto without a flash and slightly adjusted

the ISO. Now that's what I was looking at when I saw the moon in

the south Columbus sky. Enjoy

Nick and I traveled to Cleveland on Thursday evening to

watch our son play hockey. As I was leaving the arena I couldn't

help but notice how still the night was, and the three flags I

photographed seem to capture that.

Once in a while a loud aircraft, of some kind, will fly over our house.

We live very close to Rickenbacker Airport and we get to see all types of

planes flying over our heads. This, however, was a police helicopter. And

if you enlarge the second picture, you can see an officer leaning out looking

at the ground.

Still learning....the moon

I had a lot of fun adjusting the Olympus and trying capture an interesting picture. Earlier in the day I googled "how to photograph the moon with a digital camera" and a plethora of sites appeared. I felt like Goldie Locks, one site was too technical, another site tried to sell me a book and yet another was for antiquated 35mm cameras. Then I searched in blogs and found enough info to get me through the evening without purchasing an expensive telescope and lens adapter so my camera can capture the mountains, valleys and craters of the moonscape. The one tip I did not heed was having a pad and pencil handy to make note of the different adjustments. Some of the photos could be better or clearer if I knew what mode and ISO settings I had taken them in the first place. Oh well, I'll better prepared on July 22nd.

Full Moon Columbus

Prior to my (learning period) attempt at capturing fireworks, I was

able to snap some good full moon photos. I'll be out again tonight

with the tripod and Olympus. A (barely visible) Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

will occur tonight and I'm going to see if I can capture something

interesting in the night sky.

My World Tuesday; Trying to Capture Fireworks

One of the things I like most about using the Olympus, is the

ease and simplicity of the camera. Last night was the first

time I tried to capture fireworks. The Evolt E-410 has multiple

settings to fit every situation, including a specific "fireworks" mode.

I had no intention of trying to capture fireworks this year, but I passed

by my family room window at dusk and saw the full moon rising in the

eastern sky. So, again I set up the tripod on the deck and captured

some awesome moon shots (to be posted later). Then the residual,

residential fireworks appeared. I quickly changed lenses and adjusted the

shooting mode to "fireworks"and waited.....

I did learn a lot and I'll be better prepared next time they light up

the night sky. ENJOY!

setting in sequential shooting speed mode (shoots 3 frames per

second) and the flash turned off. And an Olympus XD picture card.

Another lightning capture...

The weather in central Ohio has been chaotic lately to say the least.

We were informed, via the local PSA station, that we were under a

thunderstorm warning. While Nick (and I) readied our garage for the weekend

community garage sale, I lugged both cameras with me to capture the lightning

that was sure to accompany the thunder. We found out later that this bolt actually

hit a tree one street away from our home.

I'm happy to report I was able to capture 10-12 great shots in 400+ attempts.

That's My World Tuesday; Blooming flowers

These are the white flowers we planted two years ago. I posted pictures of

I was rudely jarred from my slumber last night when brilliant flashes of light made

their way through the window shade. Earlier in the day I adjusted the settings on my

Olympus Evolt E-410 so I wouldn’t find myself messing with it in the dark should we loose

power again. I should have modified the Nikon L18 as well since that was what I used.

I was able to capture 3 really good lightning pictures out of 75 attempts. If you want

On Tuesday Nick and Christopher attended game 3 of the Stanley Cup

in Pittsburgh. My son has been a Penguins fan for 15 years so the tickets

made for an appropriate fathers day gift. I, on the other hand, was left at home to

wash, dry and fold nine loads of my "little mans" laundry. To which I did offer to do,

so no sympathy for me.

This spring storm came out of the southwest and took central Ohio by surprise.

It was a bit scary the these clouds seemed to blanket the area in a matter of minutes.

High winds, hail and lightning accompanied the rain. Later in the evening I was able

to capture a lightning strike, but I'm saving it for SkyWatch Friday. So you'll need

to check back Thursday afternoon for that awesome shot.

As I traveled through downtown Columbus, this area seemed to close in on me. Buildings appeared to tower above and cast shadows across the entire street.

The Short North is just that, a short walk north of downtown Columbus.

I love to photograph in black and white, but once I posted the B&W photo along with the original color picture, I found I was partial to the color picture. What do you think?

If you travel the countryside in my state you'll see at least one of these Ohio Bicentennial Barns.

Ohio celebrated it's bicentennial 6 years ago in 2003. I'm glad most farmers have kept the statewide banners on their homestead barns.
